Development of new oil palm varieties by the ASD genetic improvement program: the search for and use of genes that confer particular traits.

In the 40-plus years of its existence, the ASD oil palm genetic improvement program has accumuled and improved an extensive germplasm bank. The Deli dura population has been the basis for creating varieties with high initial fruit yields in sites with optimal climatic conditions for the crop and plantations with good agronomic management. However, the geographical expansion of the crop has led it to face new climate and soil situations, which merit finding and exploiting genes that confer tolerance to these environmental limitations and pressure due to various phytosanitary problems, in addition to conserving and improving the production of fruit and oil.
