Tolerance to boron deficiencies
The high precocity of many of the modern oil palm varieties and the genetic origin of some of them, make the mineral deficiencies manifest more intensely.
In a group of field experiments where dura and compact progenitors and crosses between them are evaluated, a correspondence was observed between the presence of severe boron deficiencies in the parents and their offspring. Mothers and fathers with a high incidence of self-fertilization coincide with severely affected DxT progeny.
When parents differ in their susceptibility to the deficiency, progenies behave similarly to the healthy parent, which may indicate that susceptibility to severe boron deficiency is a dominant trait that might be possible to improve.
