ASD focuses on the production of individual palm clones derived from the successive backcrossing of an E. oleifera x E. guineensis natural hybrid with E. guineensis; these have shorter trunks and leaves than the common varieties. This allows the planting of the clones at higher density (160 - 180 palms/ha), which means an increase in production of at least 12% due to the higher density, independent of the productivity of the individual palms, which can vary depending on the environment and the management they receive. Likewise, the lower growth of the clones allows a substantial reduction in harvesting costs and a considerable extension of the useful life of the commercial plantation.
